Yap

Yap is a lush tropical island located just 9 degrees north of the equator. Unlike many South Pacific islands, Yap is an uplifted portion of the Asian Continental Shelf. It is surrounded by a broad shallow lagoon and nearly 90 miles of barrier reef.

Yap is famous for its clear waters where schools of tuna, dolphins and reef fish are found in abundance. Observing the greatly varied marine life on the reefs and in the channels has become a must for divers around the world. While clear waters and sheer dropoffs certainly describe Yap's diving, one fact stands above the rest. Yap is the world's foremost destination for seeing manta rays up close and personal. There is no other place on earth where they can be seen on such a consistent basis year 'round. This fact has catapulted Yap to the top on all lists of the finest diving attractions in the world.

The diving centre is situated directly on the beach with its own jetty.It is located in the grounds of the best hotel in Yap, Traders Ridge Resort. We are a Padi 5 Star Dive Center and the 5 Star hotel is a Gold Palm Resort.

The centre is run by Maria McGlynn, an experienced British diving Instructor and her multilingual team of Instructors and Divemasters offer instruction to both Padi and CMAS Standards.

Equipment

The new centre is equipped - as are all WERNER-LAU-diving centres - to cater for the special requirements and desires of the divers. In order to meet all demands, there is always enough equipment available for hire. eg.:

* 30 BC's / Jackets (Scubapro)
* 30 Regulators with octopus, depth gauge and inflator (Scubapro)
* 50 Sets comprising of mask, fins and snorkel (Seemann)
* 30 wetsuits (3 mm Shorties)
* 10 10 dive computers (Oceanic)
* 5 underwater torches
* 2 underwater cameras

To ensure that everything runs smoothly, we have 70 Aluminium tanks (12 liter, DIN + INT) available.
Nitrox is, of course, also available without extra charge. A well equipped workshop is also available for use by the guests if needed. The members of our staff are always ready to give advice or lend a helping hand.

Privately-owned equipment

Each guest will be allocated their own locker in the diving centre.
Both the privately-owned and the hired equipment are kept in the diving centre.
To provide our guests with an all round service the equipment will be loaded onto the boats by members of our staff, who at the end of the trip will also bring the equipment back, rinse everything in clear water and store all the equipment in the diving centre.
With this all-round-service the guests are completely taken care of.

Boat Trips

Our 2 Speedboats (10 Meter, 2x 115 PS Yamaha Outboards) can accommodate 10 divers each. We are extremely flexible and both the departure times as well as the choice of diving spots are decided in accordance with your wishes.

Most of our diving spots are between 10-40 minutes away. After the first dive, a small snack is provided including tea, coffee, chocolate or water. The 2nd dive commences after a surface break of approx. one hour.

Generally we visit our two manta ray spots (Mi'l Channel and Goofnuw Channel, Valley of the Rays) daily, leaving each morning between 7 and 10 o'clock depending on the tide. The tide is so important because the best time to see the manta rays is in the two hours in the morning when the current turns. The exact time that the current turns takes place about 45 minutes later each day, as all over the rest of the world.

The diving spots on the outer reef are not influenced by the current. Departure times for these dives are daily at nine o'clock in the morning and half past two in the afternoon.

The twilight dives to the Madarin fish depart at half past five in the evening, the night dives at six o'clock.

Diving Areas

It is generally accepted that Yap is one of the top diving spots in the world. Manta rays and grey reef sharks can be see the whole year through. But the diving in Yap also offers much, much more. In addition to the legendary manta ray spots we also visit about 30 diving spots on the outer reef and 4 wrecks.
We also offer day trips to Hunters Bank Seamount and Yap Trench.

"When I (Werner Lau) visited Yap for the first time in 2001 I was so fascinated by both the island and the diving that I couldn't stop thinking about it. I saw huge rock coral reefs, lots of Japanese wrecks from World War 2, shoals of bump-head parrot fish, all sorts of sharks and, about 2 hours away, a single reef which exceeds almost everything I've seen until then.

Yap offers absolutely first-class diving and our daily goal is to offer you "the best diving experience you have ever had in your life."

Safety

The boats are equipped with oxygen, a radio and an emergency first aid kit. In Colonia is a well-equipped Hospital, with decompression chamber.

Accommodations

All 22 hotel rooms have their own butler.
There are six 'Patio'-rooms on the ground floor with direct access to a patio, six 'Veranda Ridge'-rooms on the 2nd floor with Garden View, eight 'Veranda Ocean'-rooms on either the 1st or 2nd floor with view of the sea and the bay, and two 'Grand Suites'. The two Grand Suites, each with almost 80m² set new standards for luxury suites in Micronesia.

These princely rooms are decorated with hand carved furniture and original works of art from "Ethnic Art Institute of Micronesia". Each suite has two bathrooms, a bar, a lounge, a dressing room and of course a private butler!

With their spacious patios and spectacular blick of the "Chamorro Bay" the guests are transported back in time to the elegant and graceful time of the Victorian colonial rule on Yap.

Room Facilites

All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, ceiling fan, mini bar, TV/VCR, IDD telephone, hardwood floor and French doors, which open out onto a patio or porch.

All rooms have the same floor plan, the only difference is in the location.
