Red Sea Area Zoom

The coral reefs of the Red Sea stretch from southern Sinai to the offshore area of the Deep South, which is only reached by liveaboard. The coastline covers a distance of more than 930 miles (1500 km).

Two coastal resort towns, Hurghada on the African mainland and Sharm El Sheikh on the Sinai Peninsula, are the main dive destinations, but the most popular dive sites are spread all over the region.

Among the hundreds of common fish species you will encounter daily are clownfish, butterfly fish, angel fish, parrot fish, lion fish, and turkey fish. You will often encounter schools of barracuda, and even sharks. Occasionally you can spot graceful manta rays too! The variety and amount of life is truly remarkable. Now add a vast assortment of colorful soft and hard corals and you have a diving site that ranks as one of the best in the world.

You will find an abundance of fish and organisms from tiny polyps to the huge Napoleon wrasse. But Egypt is also quite famous for the many interesting wrecks, particularly at the entrance to the Gulf of Aqaba and in the Strait of Tiran.

If you are interested in sharks you will have the opportunity to encounter various species like the silky shark, gray reef sharks, oceanic white tip and the manta ray along with many others depending on the area you visit. Cruising dolphins and friendly sea turtles are especially, but not exclusively, found in the northern region. In the southern regions you will even have an opportunity to see the endangered Dugongs (Manatees).

Climate Average 75F (23C) January 108 (42C) August
Water Temp Average 68F (20C)January 84 (29C) August
Visibility 100+ ft (30+ m) except during local plankton blooms

Travel To Egypt

Air Travel

Egypt has five international airports. Alexandria, Cairo, Luxor, Hurghada and Sharm el Shaykh. While Hurghada and Sharm el Shaykh are the dive destination airports, you may fly into one of the others first depending on your point of origin and flight.

Egypt has two national carriers for domestic flights, Egyptair and Air Sinai. Egyptair flies daily from Cairo to Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan, Abu Simbel, and Hurghada and twice a week to Kharga Oasis. Air Sinai flies from Cairo to Hurghada, Al Arish, Taba, Sharm el Shaykh, St. Catherine’s Monastery, El Tor, and to Tel Aviv, Israel.

Sharm El Sheikh to Dahab

By taxi:
Often done, especially if you land late in the evening. A 90 min drive through the mountains. About 120 LE (25-30 Euros or US Dollars, 17-20 British pounds), or 30 to 40LE per person if you are more than 2 people – agree price before you set off.

By bus:
East Delta Bus Company, several times a day. Trip is 1.5 hours, but be aware that it’s a half hour taxi ride back to Sharm to catch the bus.

Cairo to Dahab

By bus:
Several departures a day, but most people prefer to take the overnight bus (with the exception of the South Sinai coast and mountains, it’s not a pretty drive!). The trip is 9 hours, but worth it if you want to spend some time in Cairo and take in the pyramids at Giza and Saqqara.

East Delta Bus Company from Abbassiyia Station. There is also a pick up in Heliopolis near the airport. If in Cairo, definitely worth buying your ticket in advance.

Luxor to Dahab

By plane/taxi:
Flights from Luxor to Sharm El Sheik 2-3 times per week - a good travel agent should be able to arrange. From Sharm El Sheikh, taxi (or bus) to Dahab (see above).

By bus & ferry:
Bus to Hurghada and ferry to Sharm El Sheikh. You will probably need to do this over 2 days, as it’s next to impossible to co-ordinate bus arrival and ferry departure times.

Taba to Dahab

By bus:
Twice per day. 15 LE.

By taxi/mini-bus:
Often more convenient given infrequent bus departures. Try to find others to share a car with, and be prepared to haggle hard. Expect to pay about the following:

2 people: 40 per person
4 people: 25 per person
5+ people: 15 per person
