This
tiny, 63 square mile island on the eastern most reaches
of the Bahamas, maintains a lookout on the Atlantic Ocean.
But as insignificant as it may look on the map, San Salvador
looms large in the history books. It is widely believed
that Columbus' first footsteps in the New World were on
this island. With a population of less than 500, much
of the island is still largely unexplored.
Air service to San Salvador is via Nassau to Cockburn
Town.
Accommodations on San Salvador are small and sparse, except
for Club Med which offers all inclusive dive packages.
Private taxis are available but if you are staying at
Club Med, transportations will be provided.
The water around San Salvador provides up to 200' visibility
year round, among the best you will ever experience. Wrecks,
reefs, sea mounts, and deep grottos are the standard for
dive sites. |
