Located about 60 miles eat of Nassau, Eleuthera is 110 miles
long and only about 2 miles wide throughout most of it's length. The islands 10,000 residents are scattered from
the northern to the southern tip. While there are no real cities on the island, there are many small villages with
very friendly people. The most famous sites on the island are the cliffs on the Atlantic side of the island and
the caves of the interior. For diving, the best choices are actually on Harbour Island and Spanish Wells, two small
islands at the north end of Eleuthera.
There are three airports on Eleuthera. On the north end is appropriately named, North Eleuthera airport, in the
middle is Governor's Harbour, and farther south is Rock Sound. Commercial air service as well as charters are available
from the U.S. or within the islands.
Ground transportation is available via taxi, but rentals are also available from private sources. If you are going
to Spanish Wells or Harbour Island, transportation will not be of any concern. Shuttle boats are readily available
between Eleuthera and the smaller islands.
Accommodations are mostly smaller, more intimate hotels along the seaside, and include meals and diving.
The diving includes shallow and deep reef, walls, and lest we not forget, Current Cut, an exhilerating E-Ticket
ride for the adventurous. |
