Just to the northwest of Andros is a cluster of 30 islands and cays known
as the Berry Islands. The two largest, Great Harbor Cay and Chub Cay, is where most of the Berry Islands residents
live and the centers for activity. Located at the edge of the Great Bahama Bank, the Berry Islands have long been
prized for sportfishing. Lately, diving has begun to catch on and divers are finding a new and relatively unexplored
territory.
Two airports are located in the Berry Islands. One in Great Harbor Cay and one in Chub Cay. Private charters and
small commercial flights are available to and fron the United States as well as from within the islands. There
is no cruise ship travel to the Berrys.
Accommodations in the Berry Islands are very nice, but limited to several Yacht Club type resorts that cater to
fishing and diving.
Because all activity is centrally located, there is no real need for transportation on the islands here. Transportation
is furnished to and from the airport by the resorts.
Diving in the Berry Islands is just now being discovered. With it's location on the edge of the Bahama Bank, shallow
dives among the areas many reefs are plentiful, but with the Tongue of the Ocean just a stones throw away, diving
along sheer walls in also a standard treat. |
